About Research
The history of medicine is almost as primeval as the origin of human race. The subject of human sufferings and diseases was intimately associated with sorcery, religion and myth. Since ancient times, mankind has used plants to cure diseases and relieve physical sufferings. His understanding of herbal drugs was very innovative and critical from earliest times and usually was restricted to the medicine men of the tribe. Knowledge regarding sources and uses of different parts of medicinal plants was inherited through generations. India has vast natural resources of medicinal plants and these are occurring in diverse ecosystems. About 8000 species of medicinal plants exist in this country. The indigenous systems of medicine, namely, Ayurveda, Siddha and Unani have been in existence here for several centuries.
